Roland MSQ-700 Quantisation | Highly unpredictable and fun - borderline bizarre

Roland MSQ-700. The sequencer that keeps on giving. I'm using Howard Jones' "Things can only get better" intro to demonstrate the quirkiness of the quantize engine of the MSQ-700. I don't play the correct chords, but I use them rhythmically correct. Played a little off-beat to test the quantize settings. The way the MSQ-700 quantize not only the notes forwards and backwards, but also their leng...

Although a lot of outboard processing like compression and EQ can be done in the box these days there are many mixers and producers that prefer to have this done with classic vintage units. These vintage units can be hard to come by these days as studios want to keep them for good reasons. Enter the Z&H designs tribute to the Sontec MEP-250, a classic 5 band parametric equalizer. It works equally well even if you send audio outside for outboard processing. I break up the audio where needed and I level-match these clips before sending the audio down the line. Synthesizers from the the late 1970s onwards were primarily digitally controlled, running software, albeit in less ram on much less powerful hardware, and with the accompaniment of lots of TTL and CMOS. But they used CPUs like the Zylog z80 or National Semiconductor 3200 series, they were 8-bit microcomputers with customized audio hardware, and custom embedded software, aka Analog Synthesizers! As both a software engineer with decades of experience in embedded systems in the auto industry and industrial process machines, as well as somebody who has been Hands-On repairing and upgrading digital electronic music instruments spanning three decades, I can say from experience that today -synths are made much better than they were in the 1970s '80s and even '90s. Materials sciences have come a long long way. PCB design and quality as well. Surface mount components today have tighter tolerances, and long life expectancies that should outlast all of their predecessors. I see this shaping a reality in the future that these devices most certainly will need much less repair in their inner circuitry then their predecessors. Through hole components as opposed to surface mount components don't really present that much of an added difficulty to a skilled electronics professional. We work on these sub miniaturized surface mount devices all the time, we have special tools for making this work easy, it's an acquired skill set but it's not impossible to learn. VST are great for studio musicians and bedroom producers, but if you are a live performing musician, if you are a touring musician, you want a tactile instrument. But, you don't want to lug around a 30 or 40-year-old behemoth, that is full of a bunch of fragile old brittle PCBs and hard to find, rare or impossible to replace integrated circuits. You want modern features like polyphonic aftertouch, etc. You want to have lower power consumption, Lower weight, and a smaller form factor. SCAM? I don't think so.

    • @EspenKraft

      I never said the old analog synths are digital synths. ;-) As for live gigs and touring, I can only refer to myself for live gigs, I use a mix of old and vintage. Works very well. As for touring I must refer to Kebu, he hauls around a massive rig of vintage synths, most of them are indeed analogs. Howard Jones had a great rig of vintage synths when he toured only a few years ago. He had moderns ones too. He seem to tour with different quite different setups at times. I stand by what I said in the stream; Good luck getting that Behringer 2K synth fixed in 10 years. ;-)

    • @synthesizer.repair
      @synthesizer.repair 17 годин тому

      @@EspenKraft Todays Behringer or SCI synthesizers are no less repairable than anything else. The argument seems pedantic. You could say the same about a vintage synthesizer, "good luck finding a CEM 3378, or SSM 2300 in 10 years." For that matter, good luck keeping a computer running with an operating system that will host your VST in 10 years. Right? Entropy happens. Systems fail. Surface mount technology and multilayer PCSs are not the boogeyman. This is postulation, but they are much less likely to fail in a decade than a computer system or a 50 year old electronic device instrument. Digital versus analog is an old trope. By the time that the current hits the amplifier, out through the speakers and you hear it in your ear -does it matter so long as it sounds pleasant? Kudos to those musicians whom tour around vintage technology, and are wealthy and competent enough (or know competent technicians) to keep it all running. Certainly, in 10 years if someone experiences a failure with their Behringer OB clone, I'll look forward to repairing it and maybe we'll make a live stream so you can watch. 😎

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft 17 годин тому

      You can't have watched the live stream or watched many of my videos. I clearly stated (and state) that it's not the gear, it's the creativity and inspiration behind the music that counts. As a guy sustaining myself from making music for the last 30 years or so it has always been about making use of what you have. Analog or digital. Today's VSTs are a much better choice if I'm only looking for the sounds though. Cheaper, easier and in the mix no one will know. However, because I'm also an 80s guy I love to have a fleet of vintage synths as well because it puts me in the mood and I get my kicks from it. I'm not alone. Paying 5K for a new Oberheim today only makes sense (to some, not to me) if you have the unlimited check book, or want a modern synth that replicates the past. Nothing wrong with that, I have a synth like that myself, but for the sound, no way. A plugin can do just the same. Sequential have fallen terribly the last years in terms of bugs, unfinished OS and other quality issues. How will you fix the buggy Prophet X OS and how it freezes up, say, 10 years from now? Sequential has already discontinued it already. Behringer drops their synths even faster and they have even worse issues to deal with. I will continue to warn people about paying insane amounts for flagship synths now. I get questions about that almost daily. Almost no one makes synths for musicians now, they make them for consumers and as such they only have so many years to live before going bust. I have many more streams and videos to go where I'll expose greed, bad gear and corrupt CEO's.

    No I don't think it's manufacturers who are scamming the synth buyers. It's those synth buyers who severely overvalue everything "analog". And we can't do anything about that and I'd say those manufacturers and those buyers are worth each other. Synth buyers like that aren't going to make much good music anyway so we're not losing much on that front either.

    This unit seems like it would be straight-forward to clone, either physically or virtually. The firmware is key, but is small enough that it might be feasible to clean-room an implementation of the quantize algorithm like early PC BIOS to mitigate copyright risk. My MSQ-700 was stolen in the late 2000s; I only completed one track exclusively with it since I also had (have) an ASQ-10, but every time I see it used I miss it a bit. Flat UI, completely linear editing, it's about as straightforward to use as can be.

    I've got thousands of dollars in VSTs, but I don't trust that they'll still be working tomorrow. Some OS update may end up trashing things, or Native Instruments may decide to just delete more synths from my collection. (never paying another dime to NI) I've already lost a few synths which NI just silently deleted. Or what if a manufacturer goes out of business? Suddenly my VSTs can't connect to the mothership through the internet, and my investments are simply lost. Aside from the anolog vs digital aspect, this is why even for VSTs, I like the idea of having it run on some hardware (Raspberry pie or similar?) which can't be screwed by a Windows update or by malware. Won't work for Cherry Audio VSTs, though, as they keep requiring account sign-in.

    • @HowlingMoonCinemas
      @HowlingMoonCinemas День тому

      No it doesn't 🤦‍♂️. Don't try to compare autotune with this. They are completely different things. Electronic music should more often than most be very quantized and exact, like in side-scroll video games or sheet music, mainly when the tracks have a fast tempo. The perfection is what gives it a polished finish. Yes, there are times when more natural, slightly off timing imperfections are charming or even elegant in music, but for electronic music (mainly during tracks with higher tempos), exact timing is more often better, because all the sounds are more evenly spaced, sound more clear and organized - everything is more pleasant to the ear. It's like the way a good metal guitarist is liked for playing very "clean" notes and precise timing.

    Great to see this video, thank you!! I LOVE these and SO many good ideas. I was UK product manager for the importer so was lucky enough to have a 1000PX, 1000HX, 1000SX and the 1000GX in a rack (and K250 with 4 expansions, K1000 and EGP) - absolute dream job!! It has a built in MIDI analyser I used to use all the time - displays MIDI message in the display. Fantastic MIDI versatility for it's time including programme change mapping, all 16 channels available at once and high polyphony with dynamic allocation across channels and sounds with complex rules from the K250. Also the most complrehensive programmable tuning with almost every 'wierd' scale you would want and the ability to 'invert' parts of the keyboard. Also if you change sounds whilst holding notes from a previous sound, the previous sounds will stay - great for layers. Also inherited from the K1000, it had 'controller check' on start up so wherever controllers were on start, was the default "off" position - so worked with any pedal, both push-to-make and push-to-break. I bought one second hand about 12 years ago to upgrade an aged Clavinova and found I had an incredibly rare beast. They later launched the PX Plus which had an additional set of sounds (e.g. Drums, Electric Bass and Rhodes) on ROM but there was a very short period when they released retro-fit upgrade boards for a 'normal' PX. I remember us getting an engineer into UK HQ to fit the boards to a few PX's. To my delight that was what I got and now have - although now stored in the attic and unused. Things I learnt from the Boston engineers: The PX Piano and Strings are the seminal K250 ones but can sound brighter due to the D2A cut-off frequency. The SX has the same string sounds as the legendary K250 but because it has higher bit processing and more crucially, a better D2A converter, the sound is much brighter and therefore got criticised for not being as 'warm'. Many of the sounds on the GX were meant to be used with guitar effects pedals - they never wanted to put such 'dirty' sounds in a Kurzweil module. And it was that thinking that led to one of it's biggest problems vs the competition, it had no in built Signal Processing as Kurzweil thought internal DSPs were poor quality. Main thing to watch now is the LCD backlight which being so old, becomes dim making the display hard to read.
